Well, it's that time of year again,
when parents all over prepare their children to go to school
or to go back to school.
School supplies are on sale in all the stores here.
Some schools have already started.

Last minute trips to the beach,
shopping for school clothes and shoes
and calling all of your friends
is a part of this time of year.

For those of  you with children that will be staying home,
missing siblings is something to prepare for.

Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973), from a sketchbook.

Some children like to play "school".
This helps them get ready to go to school for themselves,
and also to feel connected to siblings that are 'gone to school'.

Playing SCHOOL at HOME:

Get out all those boxes and little stools you have.
Have any doll chairs? Those work too!
Depending on your child, you can have them cover each 'box chair' with handkerchiefs and bandanas.
Set them up in rows.
Now, gather all those dolls and stuffed animals you have!

Madame Alexander dolls

Place one doll or stuffed animal on each 'chair'.
Fix a chalkboard
or dry erase board
on either a chair or stand at the front.
Print out different simple activity sheets,
one different for each 'student'.

Have your child pass these out, placing one in the laps of each 'student'.
At the front, place a small desk,
or a lap desk
or something hard that your child can write/color paper on.
This will be the 'teacher's desk!
Provide dry erase markers, or chalk for your child to 'teach' with.
Have markers and crayons  and plenty of paper ready
for your child to be creative with.

Don't forget apple slices for the teacher!

vintage book cover

Need projet ideas for each 'student' to complete?
Seriously, I have things on almost every blog I have posted!

Your little teacher will need to help each 'student' with their school 'papers'.
That's enough to last for at least a month!
depending on how many students you little school ends up having.

How to draw a Penguin

Help you child understand how to sit quietly,
with their age determining how many minutes to start with.
4 years old? Have her sit for 4 minutes, doing quiet work.

Try to introduce schedules, if this is not already a part of your home life.
During school time, there will be a
Time for Writing
Time for Spelling
Time for Art
Time for Math, etc.
again, fit this to the age(s) of your child.

Don't expect a 2 year old to sit and play school for an hour!

Kokeshi Dolls

More than 1 child is terrific!
Teach how to take turns, on who gets to be the teacher,
and who gets to be one of the students.

Oh, don't forget 'recess' and snack time!
:0)

I hope these ideas have inspired you,
and taken a bit of stress out of the school season!
You can open your 'classroom' any day you want,
for the rest of the school year!

Have fun

Patriotism and Freedom

hello!

Neil Armstrong on the moon

I'd like to explore today patriotism, and freedom.
These are the two main things that our armed forces do for us.
They give their lives with a fervor of patriotism.
Sometimes because they want to.
Sometimes because they don't want to, at least not at that time.
Some have conviction,
some have doubt,
some have confidence,
some are scared.
But all have given the rest of Americans a precious gift -
freedom.

Our veterans have seen terrible things-
so I don't have to.
Our veterans have made life or death decisions -
so I don't have to.
Our veterans have sometimes been forced to make incredibly hard choices -
so I don't have to.
Our veterans have been damaged and wounded for the cause of freedom -
so I don't have to.

How can we as a nation repay such self sacrifice?

c.1918

There is a fascinating history to the photograph
on the cover of the song sheet above.
First, yes it is a photograph!
Second, the flag is made up of only US servicemen, in uniform.
You can find more photos from the same 'shoot' on the internet.
Way cool.

"Some people live an entire lifetime
and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world;
but our military doesn't have that problem."
- Ronald Reagan, 40th President

"He serves his party best who serves his country best."
- Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President

adaptation of a 1943 poster

"The saving grace of America lies in the fact
that the overwhelming majority of Americans
are possessed of two great qualities -
a sense of humor
and a sense of proportion."
- Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President

c.1917

"America is best described by one word,
freedom."
- Dwight David Eisenhower, 34th President

c.1903

"Our nation's military and law enforcement personnel
work hard to protect us.
We must thank them for their continued vigilance.
Without their sacrifice
we would be less capable of protecting our nation."
- Leonard Boswell

"God bless the Union;
it is dearer to us for the blood of brave men which has been shed in its defense...
no lapse of time,
no distance of space,
shall cause you to be forgotten."
- Edward Everett

This blog is dedicated to my grandfather
Jess McDowell
He lied about his age (he was too young) to join World War I.
He was sent from Dodge City, Kansas (think country boondocks)
to the trenches in France.
He came home with one souvenir - a silver menu holder from France.
He never talked about the war,
what he saw
or what he'd done.

That's all I know of his military service.
I do have an American Legion silver tag, very thin and worn.
It says:

Post 47
Jess McDowell
Dodge City, Kansas
-1936-

If anyone remembers him, I would love to hear from you.
He died in Elgin, IL around 1962 - 1963,
visiting us (The Troup family) with Grandma Myrtle McDowell.
I believe he is buried in the Dodge City cemetery.

"To forget how to dig the earth
and to tend the soil
is to forget ourselves."

Here are two lovely recipes for you to look forward to making
from your fresh strawberry garden!

Fresh Strawberries with Lemon Cream

Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothies:

of course, you don't have to wait for chocolate chips to grow...

On that happy note, I will close for today.
You need time to go and prep some soil!

Glorious Gardening

Hi!
painting by Qui Ping, Chinese artist

Let's get dirty today!
That means, go get your gardening pants on,
grab some gloves and a trowel -
and Prepare To Get Dirty!

G-A-R-D-E-N!
These are some of my recycled bottlecap magnets that I make.
You can find many more at my etsy shop:

"You cannot forget if you would
those golden kisses all over
the cheeks of the meadow,
queerly called dandelions."

- Henry Ward Beecher

more bottlecap magnets, but these are all made with recycled junk mail!

Here is a gardening paper doll from Finland:

The next paper doll set is vintage international, about France.
Apparently, French children love to garden!
At least in vintage times...

I like Bert and Ernie's way to garden!

"We can never have enough of nature."
- Henry David Thoreau

Let's bring some of that garden sunshine inside!
Take a peek at these cute little ladybugs -
so important for a healthy garden.

I don't really need to explain these other than:
Ritz Crackers, black licorice string, and either peanut butter or any kind of dip. Perhaps a dab of hummus?
They have placed little dabs of red icing (or?) for spots on top.

How cute and easy is that?
vintage clip

Every garden needs lady bugs to eat the other nasty bugs we don't want.

Good thing Liana has made a ladybug costume for our paperdolls....
By now you should have a nice folder full of Liana's costumes and dolls.
Two of the paper dolls will fit this pretty little ladybug!

A tongue twister:
big black bugs bleed blue black blood but baby black bugs bleed blue blood

Now, say that 5 times really fast. It'a great workout for your face and tongue!

Don't forget some other good garden friends:
a fairy Toad House by claysoul, etsy
She makes just wonderful toad houses!

Of course, if you live in a desert area

(that's d-e-s-e-r-t, NOT dessert!!)

you might want to try your hand at some
Mickey Mouse style of gardening:
ToonTown, Magic Kingdom, WaltDisneyWorld

Evidently, MM has access to some pretty special seeds:

"Better a dish of vegetables stewed with love
than the best of beef stewed with hatred."

- Proverbs chapter 15, verse 17, Holy Bible

A gardening gnome paper doll for you!

I think it is time for me to go dig out some weeds in my gardens, now!
I do grow a good, healthy weed...

Breaking News:
My tulips are so pretty now!
