The term jellyfish encompasses
about 1500 species,
ranging in size
from microscopic
to more than 7 feet around
and 120 feet long.

Most jellyfish do not have
a central nervous system.
Instead they have nerve nets
that sense changes in the
environment, & then coordinate
the jellyfish response to that.
They do not need respiratory organs
such as lungs,
as they absorb their oxygen.

Because they have no ‘hard’ parts,
fossils are very rare.
Australian spotted jellyfish
They are considered to be
the oldest multi-organ animal group.
Some people even believe
they lived before there were
dinosaurs!

Imagine putting not quite 3 school buses
in a line - end to front, etc.
That’s about how long their tentacles
can be - up to 120 feet!
Marine authorities still do not agree on what is a ‘true jellyfish’, what is plankton, or even if ‘that one’ is a jellyfish at all!
Jellyfish kill more people every year
than sharks do.
provided several jellyfish photos)
Box jellyfish are considered the nasty jellyfish relative from out of town that
no one in the family talks about.
They can be found in Northern Australia’s ocean & the Indo-Pacific region.
A sting from a Box Jellie tentacle
can kill a person in 3 minutes.
It is not a pleasant way to die.
Each tentacle holds enough poison
to kill 20 people.
Box jellyfish also have 24 eyes
!!!
All jellies produce some kind of toxin,
But
not all toxins affect humans.
Even after a jellyfish is dead,
they can still give nasty stings.
Best choice?
Don’t touch any jellyfish with
bare hands or skin.
Well, as always I have more information,
but I do not need to write a book!
Jellyfish are beautiful creatures,
with some really unique characteristics.
