Doors to open, doors to close

Welcome!
This is a 14th century door
in King’s Palace, Fez Medina, Morocco

I have always loved the artistry and workmanship put in to different doors. So much color, shape and pattern concentrated on an everyday object.

We open and close doors every day.

Have you seen any unusual doors?
A door painted uniquely or
with fanciful decorations?

Look around!
You never know what beauty you might discover.

Old Town Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Some doors are steeped in history,
such as this one -

This door can be found at
Penshurst Place Gardens, Kent, UK
Penshurst was built in 1341.
Two of Henry IV’s sons owned it,
and Henry VIII used it as a hunting lodge.
It became a part of Anne of Cleves’
divorce settlement.
Then it went to Henry VIII’s son, Edward VI.
Later, Henry VIII gave it to his loyal steward and tutor
Sir William Sidney in 1552.
It has remained in the Sidney family since.
Just think of who has walked through this door!

This Dogan door is from Koundou, Guina, Mali.
The Dogon language is oral,
so they often record their history in wood carvings.
This door tells about Dogon Cosmology
and the migration from ancestral lands
from the 12th - 15th centuries
to their current location,
Bandiagara Escarpment

My last door to share today is found in
Wroclaw, Poland -

I hope you will share with us
a door or two that you
have found interesting.
Make a comment, and I will get back to you!
