Summer Memories with a bit of Nessie

Tecocatu

'Peace' in the Nhengatu Native language, spoken in Brazil

'Brasilia' 7/3/12
photo cred: Ueslei Marcelino

Hello there!
It's been a stressful week for us, so I haven't been able
to carve out the time to post much recently. Sorry about that.

Summer is waning. I see yellow leaves on many trees now.
School has started for most of the Colorado schools.
Our neighborhood is quieter now.
Sometimes that's nice.
But I really don't mind the sound of children playing nicely.

Here is a nice paper doll set of Marisole - a 'sporty girl':

I always hated it when teachers would ask on the first day of school:
"So, what did you do this summer?"

Many times my answer would be:
"I moved".

How can I sum up all the things I did during the summer?
I figured the teachers didn't want to hear:

I spent hours playing with clover, and making clover chains.

My friends and I went to the Lousville Pool and I got planter's warts,
twice.

Glenda and I went rolling down the hills of the Southeast Theological Seminary's grounds.

My sister was actually nice to me one day,
and we made 'tea' out of warm water and lemon drops
and had a tea party using the miniature china tea set we had.

Laura and I made gazillions of little bugs and butterflies
and other super fun stuff from our 'goop' maker.

My grandmother made some clothes for my Barbies.
Then she showed me how to do it myself.

Nah, I would have never said any of that.
I mean, really, how embarrassing!

Other kids in my classes would say
"We took a trip to _____________
(fill in the blank with some great sounding destination.)

"We visited my cousins in ___________
(fill in the blank with some great sounding destination.)

You get the idea!!!
:-)

So
let's see what others have been up to this summer!

photo taken November, 2011

George Edwards, a local fisherman and "Nessie" searcher,
took one of the most viable, authentic photos of Nessie to date.
aka....'The Lock Ness Monster'.
so called because it is in the Loch Ness in Great Britain,
along the Great Glen which divides the North of Scotland
from Inverness to Fort William;
and because there have been sightings reported there
for centuries.

You can check out the 'official' web site here:

I have been able to create several new collage paper paintings.

Here is a sneek peak at a few that I haven't listed yet:

So, what have YOU been up to?
SHARE WITH US

It's been awhile since I have had any comments on my blog,
why don't you comment, today?
It really is very simple, and you don't have to sign up or anything.

Well, it's that time again, when,
after spending an hour and 20 minutes to type and post this simple blog
(gggrrrrrrrr....... boo Yahoo)
(gggrrrrrr.....boo Windows Internet Explorer)
I have to get ready and go run some errands.

The laundromat destroyed one of my Mom's jackets.
It was a very nice memory, and also looked great on me.
sigh.
The laundromat lady, Mary, has been very sympathetic
and really very nice.
I'm not angry or anything - what would that change?
I'm just sad.

So, here is something to finish up on an upbeat note:

Well, it's that time of year again,
when parents all over prepare their children to go to school
or to go back to school.
School supplies are on sale in all the stores here.
Some schools have already started.

For those of  you with children that will be staying home,
missing siblings is something to prepare for.

Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973), from a sketchbook.

Some children like to play "school".
This helps them get ready to go to school for themselves,
and also to feel connected to siblings that are 'gone to school'.

Playing SCHOOL at HOME:

Get out all those boxes and little stools you have.
Have any doll chairs? Those work too!
Depending on your child, you can have them cover each 'box chair' with handkerchiefs and bandanas.
Set them up in rows.
Now, gather all those dolls and stuffed animals you have!

Madame Alexander dolls

Place one doll or stuffed animal on each 'chair'.
Fix a chalkboard
or dry erase board
on either a chair or stand at the front.
Print out different simple activity sheets,
one different for each 'student'.

Have your child pass these out, placing one in the laps of each 'student'.
At the front, place a small desk,
or a lap desk
or something hard that your child can write/color paper on.
This will be the 'teacher's desk!
Provide dry erase markers, or chalk for your child to 'teach' with.
Have markers and crayons  and plenty of paper ready
for your child to be creative with.

Don't forget apple slices for the teacher!

vintage book cover

Need projet ideas for each 'student' to complete?
Seriously, I have things on almost every blog I have posted!

Your little teacher will need to help each 'student' with their school 'papers'.
That's enough to last for at least a month!
depending on how many students you little school ends up having.

How to draw a Penguin

Help you child understand how to sit quietly,
with their age determining how many minutes to start with.
4 years old? Have her sit for 4 minutes, doing quiet work.

Try to introduce schedules, if this is not already a part of your home life.
During school time, there will be a
Time for Writing
Time for Spelling
Time for Art
Time for Math, etc.
again, fit this to the age(s) of your child.

Don't expect a 2 year old to sit and play school for an hour!

Kokeshi Dolls

More than 1 child is terrific!
Teach how to take turns, on who gets to be the teacher,
and who gets to be one of the students.

Oh, don't forget 'recess' and snack time!
:0)

I hope these ideas have inspired you,
and taken a bit of stress out of the school season!
You can open your 'classroom' any day you want,
for the rest of the school year!

Have fun

3 ways to say 'Peace' in Tagalog
the official language of the Philippines

El Nido, a protected municipality of the Philippines

Today, let's explore the Philippines!

Thee are 8 major dialects (languages) in the Philippines.
There are 2 official languages:
Tagalog & English

Kalinaw
Kahusayan

'Peace'  said in two ways in the Cebuano language
One of the 8 major dialects

28% of the Philippines are Tagalog.
13% are Cebuano.
Now you can say 'peace' to both language groups!!
:0)

There's lots of ground to cover in the Philippines -
literally!
The Philippine archipelago (good word to  look up)
is made up of 7,107 islands!!!

msnbc.msn.com

The Philippines has one of the longest coastlines in Asia -
36,289 kilometres to be exact.
That's a lot of fine powdery white sand
and clean, clear and cool waters.

I can think of many things to do on a pretty, clean shoreline -
and I bet you can too!!

Like showing off your new swim suit:

or playing beach ball -

The Philippines have lots of sporting type activities that draw many tourists.

I had never heard of swimming with whale sharks!
It sounds fun though -

The Filipinos have their share of natural hazards
(although I would call them natural disasters!)

They have:
tsunamis
landslides
active volcanoes
and
destructive earthquakes!

(I did want to question that destructive earthquake part,
but I guess you can have earthquakes that are milder
and don't destroy anything.)

Let's get back to that
'active volcanoes' part!

The Taal volcano has been deemed a 'Decade Volcano" by the
International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior.
Now say that 5 times in a row, fast!!!

Taal Volcano in Batangas, Philippines

The Taal has shown recent unrest and may erupt in the near future.
So....
what makes a volcano 'unrestful'?
Somebody has to come up with a joke about that....
Does the volcano have an upset tummy?
Does it suffer from mid-life crisis?
Are volcanoes part of the postal service?

:0)

Mount Mayon in Albay, Philippines

Mount Mayon is called
the most beautiful volcano on earth.

It has 47 recorded eruptions since 1616!
It buried the town of Cagsawa under 30 feet of volcanic ash.
In 2006 2,200 people were dead in a blink of an eye.
Mount Mayon's longest uninterrupted eruption started on June 23, 1897.
For almost 7 days it rained fire, and the lava flowed over 7 miles to the East.
Under that lava is the village of Bacacay.
Nearby towns of Libog, San Roque, Misericordia and Santo Nino
lost  500 people due to deadly steam and falling hot rocks.
Wow.
That's a lot of death associated with 'the most beautiful volcano'.

Mount Mayon volcano in Albay, the Philippines

Thee are actually 18 different volcanoes in the Philippines!
Mount Mayon is considered the 'most famous'.
Hmmm... perhaps not a title one would want to have.

Well, as always it seems, I have found some cool facts about the Philippines.
I dont' want to write a book (really, Michael, really)
so I think I will do Part II the Philippines tomorrow, okay?

Did you know the CIA web site has great facts

Hamlet, Ulysses, Sirens and Stepsisters

Pau

'Peace' in the Catalan language, spoken in Spain

Spanish children in traditional costume

Here is a paper doll representing Spain from an old paperdoll set, 1934.
Thanks Origamibears for sharing!

I did a little color correcting on the first page of clothes. Do you like it?
I think it is probably closer to the original printing. Just because ours are yellowed now doesn't mean that's what they looked like when first printed!

Today I am sharing 3 of my Collage Art Dolls that have a
'literature' theme.
Reminder: I use all recycled junk mail to make my art!

Go Shakespeare, the Grimm Brothers and Homer!
Shakespeare and Homer don't really fit into a 'fairy tale' category,
thus we have

Literature!

(feeling a little smarter already?!)

First we will tackle Ulysses and the Sea Sirens.
Ulysses' adventures were first written by Homer,
although Alfred Tennyson later helped him to become famous with his poetry.

'Ulysses and the Sirens'
by Herbert James Draper, c. 1909

Here is a different interpretation by John W. Waterhouse:

I love John William Waterhouse's paintings!
Here is another by him:

'The Siren' by John W. Waterhouse
c. 1900

While I didn't have in mind specifically Ulyesses' Sirens,
here is my take on a Mermaid Siren:

"Mermaid Seductress"

:0)

Next up, I tackle Hamlet, by William Shakespeare
(although a few disagree that he wrote any of the plays attributed to him.)

I love this next photo.
Edwin Booth is the brother to John Wilkes Booth
who is of course infamous for killing President Abraham Lincoln.
Perhaps you didn't realize that John Wilkes Booth came from a successful acting career, and from a successful family of actors.
Here is Edwin Booth, in the role of Hamlet:

c. 1870, courtesy of wikipedia

So, so many versions of this play have been adapted, tweaked and sometimes almost unrecognizably changed.
Go Shakespeare.
Go Hamlet.

'Hamlet and Ophelia'
by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, c. 1858
in the British Museum, London

Oh, Ophelia is worthy of her very own blog,
so I'm not going into that aspect of Hamlet.
Just Hamlet the agonized prince!

This painting is of Ophelia and the King and the Queen,
but is Hamlet lurking in the background there?

by Henrietta Rae
1859 - 1928

Up next is a photo of the famous American actress
Sarah Bernhardt.
She was famous both here in the USA and in Europe and Britain.
I'm so glad I came across this photo!

Sarah Bernhardt as Hamlet
1880 - 1888

Now we have my original Collage Art Doll

'Hamletta'

'Hamletta' original Collage Art Doll by inkspired

:0)

I don't start out a piece as specifically one thing, usually.
I know what it will be after I add a few things.
Sometimes as soon as I find the eyes, I know what the rest should look like.
Sometimes it may be a piece of clothing or accessory,
and I build the collage art doll around that.
Creative processes are rarely definable, I think!
Every now and then I will start with a goal/picture in mind.
Pretty rarely however!

Lets explore the Grimm Brothers fairy tale of

Cinderella

If you have never read the original Grimms Brothers,
I would suggest you try it!
Be sure to get an unabridged version.
Their fairy tales are really pretty gruesome!

Disney's stepsisters, trading pin

Most of us are familiar with the Disney - American versions of their fairy tales.
These are loosly based on the original tales!

coloring page by John Hutton

I would like to focus on those bad, bad stepsisters.
In the musical versions,
Rogers and Hammerstein took a humorous look at the stepsisters.
I recently purchased a copy of the original TV broadcast of Cinderella,
introducing Julie Andrews.
She had already been 'discovered' on Broadway, although she was quite young.
On the DVD there are special features where the actors, director, etc. talk about the hectic schedule they were on to produce this musical.
I love it!

Cinderella and her two stepsisters, unknown

I think my all-time favorite will probably be the second TV version,
with Lesley Anne Warren as Cinderella.
Back in the day, this would be on TV for one night a year.
We always tried to make it a family night and watch it together!

And I just LOVE the songs of the stepsisters....

illustrator uknown - it is in the left hand corner, but I can't read it
and it was not credited on folkard_cindy1  where I found it.
Anyone have details or more info? Let me know!

I do think however that the most handsome-est* prince is the one in
Whitney Houston's Rogers & Hammerstein Cinderella version.

*(You know, that's the great thing about having your own blog -
you can make up words if you want!!)

I haven't seen him on anything else, but I understand
he is a Broadway actor/singer, not really in TV or movies.
Too bad!
but....
I'm not talking princes today, I'm talking stepsisters!

unknown illustrator

Oh well, I do have one more painting I wanted to share,
and of course it has no stepsisters in it,
but I think it is cool....
and it's my blog and I'll do want I want to,
do want I want to...

Okay, get back in the stepsister mode.

:0)

Hope you have enjoyed this little stroll through 3 great stories,
by 3 great authors (or 4 if you give the Grimm Brothers 2!)

I have been super busy trying to get my new etsy shop all updated and adding new items.

I'm only behind by about 100 images I need to add!!
not going there....
I also have been struggling with Yahoo Small Business,
PayPal,
Yahoo Mail...
and more and more that each have their own little snafus that have to be fixed.
I'm almost getting accustomed
to being on hold for 30 minutes before I speak to anyone.
sigh.

I also have been trying to work on my 2 websites.
More snafus. More 'on hold'.

 and

but,
I really like showing off my work,
and getting money for it too!!!

and apparently I also like to talk and talk and talk...
so see you soon!
